Periodontal
Therapy
Periodontal
disease is a chronic disease which can be controlled but not cured.
Regular periodontal examinations and dental cleanings following
treatment are necessary to prevent recurring disease. Periodontal
disease is an infection that gets inside and underneath the gums.
It also affects the bone surrounding the
teeth.

Scaling and
Root Planing
Scaling and
Root Planing, often referred to as a deep cleaning, is a technique
that improves the areas surrounding the teeth that are prone to
periodontal infection. This helps eliminate plaque build up as well
as tartar from the crown to the root of each tooth. Scaling, at and
below the gum line, reaches tartar deposits that cannot be removed
by an ordinary dental cleaning. Root Planing smoothes rough spots
on the roots where bacteria collect so that plaque will have less
chance of reattaching itself to the root of the
tooth.
Polishing
Once your dental cleaning has been
performed, a polish may be necessary. The hygienist will use a high
speed polisher. The result will be smooth feeling teeth that will
look bright and feel healthy.
